Green Apple Tea

My favorite Ikea mug and nothing like a cup of tea at this hour. Finally captured the reflection of the apple in the side of the mug. Came out well me thinks! Was planning on going to the country side for some photographs but it is snowing since yesterday and not a good day to get out, maybe tomorrow. Just finished gessoing my boards and trying out a bigger size of 8x8s for next month. A Happy March to everyone!

Sketchtaro

Discovered this artist Marc Taro Holmes and am completely awestruck by his work. He does alot of sketches of nudes and fictitious characters, paints in oils and does some amazing digital drawings. Looking at his work leaves me inspired and hungry to paint.
This is ones of his many sketches..........like the fluidity of the form, the girl's features and her hands. Hands are so hard to draw and paint but he got it!
One of his digital paintings. He uses a program called Artrage for his digital work and I love the combination of defined and loose work. I have downloaded Artrage for a 30 day trial. Will post on how it goes. If you would like to see more of Tarosan's work click on http://tarosan.wordpress.com/

Lily

I did this painting during the phase of exploring the female form. It was completed in Dubai and I was fascinated with capturing the transparent fabric against her skin. At the time D had built me a studio in our stairwell which had a 14 foot ceiling. D divided the space in half and I had a 7 foot studio with skylights illuminating my studio from both sides. I used a ladder to get up there and it was my piece of heaven. Got much work done in this space and recently found out that the house has been torn down to build a high rise. Boo hoo!

A Hint of Spring

Bought some tulips over the weekend and since I am not one to paint a bunch of them decided to cut one of the flowers and lay it on its side. This was more my style and ended up more in keeping with my simple compositions. Do you like the watermark? yes I like it too.

Shades of Blush

This time around I intentionally toned down the actual colors of the objects to achieve an overall muted feeling. I'm happy with the way this turned out.

Three's Company

This time I under painted the board with a dusty pink and you will spot it showing through the background grey giving a lovely effect. Painting fruit always make me happy so every two days I will go back to painting them. The girls love their apples and I have to guard my 'subjects' most days!

Blushing Turnips

First time I painted turnips and love the way the colors turned out. Don't really eat them though as quite pungent but enjoyable to paint. I want to try landscapes next week so maybe will drive into the countryside this weekend to get some photos.

Valentine's Day

D and the girls screen printed the V-day cards they wanted to hand out to their classmates. The design was conceptualized by D and the girls helped him with the application. You can read the detail behind the venture or should I say adventure here on D's blog

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY EVERYONE!

Brush holder on easel

The easel prior to the hack.

Some time ago I had whined to D about how I had no where to set down my wet brushes and how I looked like Edward Scissorhands trying to hold all 7 of them in my left hand while I painted.

He came up with this cool solution that was functional but also looked good. He got the narrow vase from the local Thrift store and used some old pine that was bored, cut and drilled to specification. He then sanded it down and gave it a quick coat of lacquer and attached it to the easel. He says its a bit crude but I say "Wow" and "Thank you sweets".

How to frame multiple paintings

A great idea when buying smaller art is to group them together in one frame. This creates a series with a similar theme. In this case the pears were grouped together in a black frame that really made the colors pop. As a fruit I really like painting pears due to their loose shapes and wonderful subtlelties of color.

Butternut Squash

This is one of my favorite vegetables. There is nothing more satisfying that a bowl of hearty butternut squash soup on a cold snowy day. I really like the way the colors came together in this painting - the peach, oranges and greens. To keep it cohesive I even signed in a muted green shade so as to make the signature blend in more. I don't think  I have seen this squash painted by anyone before so quite happy I tried my hand at it.

A Good Read

Still pursuing my pear series but decided to prop the pear on a lovely old leather-bound household encyclopedia book from the 60's. The corners were ripped and the pages yellowed but I love books...old and new, and so this one came home with us. A potential customer inquired on framing options and tomorrow I will post a simple solution that displays three of my paintings.

Red White and Blue

Doesn't red, white and blue really look good together...complimentary colors. With this mug I did much better with the edges at the mouth and the shadows. The more I paint the more I realize you have to get the drawing right. Once that is planted and perfect, everything else works itself out.

Packing & Shipping

I was fortunate to have sold one of my paintings within 12 hours of having listed them on ETSY. The painting that sold was one of my more recent ones and I wanted it to dry prior to packing and shipping the same to the States.

I just wanted to detail how we prepare the painting for shipping.

D made a custom box measuring 8 x 8 x 2 inches

The top and bottom packing are the main supports on which the painting rests exactly 1 inch from the bottom and the top. The sides are merely packing keeping the painting centered.

All packed and ready to go!!

A Bowl Full

I had bought a pair of these blue bowls while in Dubai simply because I liked the dirty blue shade. Again realized how lovely blue and red look together.
